Marie Agnes Lowery Gwosdz Joseph, (92), of Edna, Texas, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on May 27, 2024.
She was born in Edna, Texas on August 3, 1931, to parents Leslie and Lloyd Lowery. As a child living in a small town, Marie enjoyed fishing with her father, gardening, climbing trees, and other adventures.
A lifelong member of the Catholic church, Marie lived out her faith through her commitment and service to the church including various activities at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society at St. George Maronite Catholic Church.
As a breast cancer survivor, Marie volunteered with a Christian cancer grief support group. She was also an active volunteer for Girl Scouts of America.
Marie developed a heart for veterans as both husbands, two children, one grandson and multiple members of her extended family served their country in the armed services.
Her interests and hobbies were many including reading, needle work, traveling, baking, genealogy, gardening, and watching the birds in her yard. She loved her cat Sweetie who was a faithful companion for many years. She was a kind, giving, and strong woman with a ready smile for everyone she met.
Marie married Edward J. Gwosdz on August 16, 1949, in Edna, Texas. They were married for 31 years before he succumbed to cancer in 1980. They raised their family of five children in Houston, Texas. She enjoyed summertime activities including family road trips and girl time with her daughters. Christmas was a special time for Marie when her family and her sister Margaret’s family gathered for the festivities at her mom’s home in Edna, Texas. Marie and Joe G. Joseph were married on October 11, 1986, in San Antonio, Texas, and Marie became the stepmother to Joe’s seven children. Marie and Joe were married for 26 years before he passed away in 2012. Marie relished her travels with Joe and learning about various cities, countries and cultures.
The Gwosdz and Joseph extended families were large in number and celebrated often. Marie took pleasure in time spent with her family at gatherings of all kinds and sizes.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents Leslie and Lloyd Lowery, her two husbands Edward J. Gwosdz and Joe G. Joseph, and her son Richard Wayne Gwosdz.
Marie is survived by are her sister Margaret Partin; her children Betty Barnes (Phil), Gary Gwosdz (Paula), Donald Gwosdz (Kaye), and Rita Evans (Darren); her stepchildren Chris Joseph, Paul Joseph (Marie), Anne Joseph-Carraway (Kenny), John Joseph (Catherine), Mary Joseph, David Joseph (Melanie), and Tony Joseph (Jessica). Combined, the Gwosdz and Joseph children blessed Marie with 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A Visitation and Burial service will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2024, beginning 12:00 pm at Integrity Funeral Home/Forest Lawn Cemetery; 8601 Almeda Genoa Road, Houston, Tx 77075.
In her final years, Marie’s granddaughter Jonie became her live-in companion and ultimately her caregiver. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Disabled American Veterans, www.dav.org
